Vacationing on Oak Island? Then visit historic Southport, NC too!
Located just across the Old Bridge from Oak Island, the city limits of Southport begin as you proceed up Long Beach Rd to N. Howe St. The Long Beach Rd corridor continues to develop nicely with plenty of shops, furniture stores, car rentals, gas and auto repairs, restaurants and novelty stores, even the City of Southport Chamber of Commerce offices are here. Once you make the turn onto N. Howe St, you will find more restaurants, fast food, a Walmart and various places of worship.
But the best part of Southport is at the end of Howe St. in its historic downtown area situated on the Cape Fear River basin as it extends out to the open blue of the Atlantic Ocean. This beautiful, quaint town has been the backdrop and venue for a few recent big-screen films and for good reason further supported by Coastal Living’s top vote receiver as “America’s Happiest Seaside Town.” Stroll the main part of Howe St. for arts, crafts, souvenirs, and gift shops or dine in one of the many fantastic new restaurants that continue to improve our area one at a time. The waterfront is especially popular to dine in and listen to music while enjoying your favorite summertime spirits and amazing, picturesque Southport sunsets.
Southport is also at the doorstep to Bald Head, Island if you are looking for an exploratory day excursion off the mainland by ferry. The same nearby NC Ferry system also provides service to Ft. Fisher where you can explore the old battlefields and history of the Cape Fear region or take a tour in the North Carolina Aquarium featuring the region's aquatic life in interactive exhibits & live programs. So much to do and it is all close enough to enjoy during your next Oak Island vacation.
Or if you prefer to stay locally in Southport, then check out our own Calypso.
