About Oak Island, North Carolina
Oak Island’s ten miles of unspoiled coastal strand faces south on the Atlantic Ocean. By car, we’re just 27 miles south of Wilmington, NC and 60 miles north of Myrtle Beach, SC. The area is known for its gnarled live oak trees that lean toward the ground from years of sea breezes. In addition to the sun and surf, many local activities attract vacationers year-round. With gentle surf, miles of sandy beach, breathtaking views of the Intracoastal Waterway, and spectacular sunsets, it is a perfect setting for making happy memories.
Oak Island is family-oriented with a local culture that is friendly and accommodating. Some of the island is home to year-round residents, so, the island has amenities such as a library, post office, fire department, and banks. Community attractions include intriguing shops and restaurants, shady parks with a children’s playground, golfing at the Oak Island Country Club, miniature golfing, and fishing on the two local piers Ocean Crest Pier and Yaupon Beach Pier. Caswell Beach shares Oak Island and takes its name from Fort Caswell, a U.S. Army fort built in 1826 at the mouth of the Cape Fear River. Portions of this historic fort still exist. Nearby is Southport, a quaint and picturesque town with several marinas and an array of interesting shops and diverse restaurants. A short ferry ride from Southport to Ft. Fisher and the North Carolina Aquarium. These historic and educational sites offer something for all ages throughout the year.
